“Getting Unstuck”

‍ ‍

"Pain pushes until the vision pulls." ~ Michael Beckwith

Science has learned a great deal about why people feel stuck.

Feeling stuck is rarely a sign that something is wrong with you. More often, it reflects a predictable interaction between your brain, emotions, habits, environment, and uncertainty about the future. Feeling stuck often leads us to a life transition. Life transitions bring up VERY important questions. Life transitions don’t need to be solved all at once. The toughest life transitions can positively grow our lives.

Your Brain Prefers the Familiar Over the Unknown!

Neuroscience shows that the brain is designed to conserve energy and reduce uncertainty. Even when a current situation is frustrating, the familiar often feels safer than change.

Researchers have found that uncertainty activates many of the same threat-detection systems that respond to physical danger. As a result, your brain may interpret positive change as risky simply because it is unfamiliar.

This explains why someone can:

  • Dislike their job but stay for years

  • Feel unhappy in a relationship but avoid difficult conversations

  • Dream about a new chapter while taking little action

The challenge is not usually a lack of desire. It is often a conflict between growth and safety.

Research Points Toward Five Practical Strategies to Get Unstuck:

1. Clarify your values. ‍

What really (actually) matters most to you now?

‍ ‍

2. Shrink the challenge. ‍

What is one step sooooo small that it feels almost impossible not to do?

‍ ‍

3. Increase your reason. ‍ ‍

Who are you feeling called to serve?

‍ ‍

4. Experiment instead of decide. ‍ ‍

Why not test rather than commit to an idea permanently?

‍ ‍

5. Build evidence.

What recent success proves you are capable of growth?

‍ ‍

Studies in positive psychology frequently report that feeling stagnant, restless, or stuck in many cases is less about circumstances and more about feeling misaligned. Feeling misaligned means that you might feel trapped, you might feel like you've stopped learning and growing, it's times when you spend the majority of your time doing meaningless activities that don't fill you with a sense of purpose and fulfillment or you might feel isolated.

Stuckness Is Often a Decision Problem, not a Motivation Problem! Another way of describing this is… analysis paralysis. Continued psychological research shows that people often feel stuck when they are:

  • Trying to choose between two good options

  • Trying to avoid making the wrong choice

  • Seeking certainty before acting

  • Waiting until they feel confident

Reflect on this daily mantra and implement it if it suits you… “I release any energies and emotions that are not mine.” ~ Lee Harris

Many people believe:

Motivation → Action → Results

Research often shows the opposite:

Action → Momentum → Motivation → Results

People often feel stuck not because they lack potential, but because they are standing between an old version of themselves and a new one.

Accept responsibility for your own life. Put yourself in the driver's seat of your own life. Notice how you can change your outer world as you grow your inner world. Trust your inner wisdom.  You might practice channeling your inner knowing more frequently. Acknowledge your nervous system by simply taking time to slow down and rest in your own breath.  Practice feeling new awareness and gratitude for all that you notice and receive. Your somatic body intelligence can lead you to deep head and mind intelligence.

Sometimes the first breakthrough is not a new plan. It is recreating enough emotional capacity to see possibilities again.

  • Reinvent or reinvest with trust in your self-discovery = befriend yourSelf

  • Nurture your fulfillment and well-being = behold new awareness

  • Seek guidance and emotional support = reach out with curiosity

  • Plan financially and practically = seek support and resources
